In September 2022, filming began on "Todos Pecadores", the latest short film directed by Ben Welsh, a photographer and filmmaker based in Tarifa, Cádiz. After nearly three months of production, the project was recently premiered at Tarifa Tower during an exclusive event attended by more than 100 guests, including the cast, crew, friends, and fans of the director's work.
"Todos Pecadores" (which translates to "We Are All Sinners") is a short film born with a clear purpose: to raise awareness about the environmental crisis we face and to remind us that, in one way or another, we are all responsible. The original idea came from Carlota Welsh, the director’s daughter, who suggested creating a story to denounce the growing problem of waste and pollution, particularly in iconic natural spaces like the beaches of Tarifa.
Filming Locations in the Heart of Tarifa
One of the standout aspects of "Todos Pecadores" is the selection of shooting locations. Filming took place entirely in Tarifa, using some of the most symbolic spots in the area. The natural beauty of these spaces contrasts sharply with the film's message, highlighting how even the most stunning environments suffer from human negligence.
Some of the key locations where the short film was shot include:
Los Lances Beach, an iconic beach in Tarifa, sadly affected by waste and tourism impact.
Isla de Las Palomas, the southernmost point of continental Europe, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea.
Bar Tarifa and Chiringuito Agua, two popular social spots that served as real-life settings for various scenes.
Ben Welsh's professional studio, where several crucial scenes were filmed, particularly those involving special effects that required precise technical work.
Over 30 People Involved in the Production
"Todos Pecadores" brought together more than 30 people who contributed as actors, extras, assistants, and production crew. It was a collaborative, local effort driven by a shared commitment to the film’s environmental message.
Among the cast and crew are names such as Sergio Pérez Bernal as "The Messenger", Aida Ramírez Llorente as the "Girl Who Recorded the Monster", and Eva Cámara García, who gave her voice to "Mother Nature".
Everyone involved offered their time and talent, creating a passionate, community-driven film that speaks to the heart of Tarifa and its people.
A Story That Holds Us All Accountable
The plot of "Todos Pecadores" revolves around Mother Nature sending a creature with an urgent message for humanity. Through this symbolic figure, the film aims to highlight how our collective negligence towards the environment has reached dangerous levels.
The underlying message is simple but powerful: we are all sinners when it comes to protecting our planet. Whether by directly littering, ignoring the problem, or failing to take action, we all play a part in the current environmental crisis.
"Todos Pecadores" invites viewers to reflect on their personal habits and the impact of their actions, while also emphasizing that meaningful change requires collective responsibility.
Production Challenges
Filming a short film outdoors always comes with its fair share of challenges, and "Todos Pecadores" was no exception. Two of the main obstacles faced during production were:
Special Effects: Several scenes required visual effects to bring certain elements of the story to life, which added complexity to the filming and post-production processes.
Tarifa's Wind: Known globally for its strong winds, Tarifa's weather made recording clear audio particularly difficult, forcing the crew to repeat takes and use specialized sound equipment to minimize interference.
An Independent Production with Heart
Despite working with limited resources, "Todos Pecadores" stands out for its artistic quality and powerful message. Thanks to the dedication and talent of the entire team, the short film was completed with care, attention to detail, and a clear social purpose.
For Ben Welsh, this film is part of a broader creative vision to produce independent films in Tarifa that not only showcase the beauty of the region but also address critical issues affecting our world today.
Premiere and Future Plans
The premiere of "Todos Pecadores" took place at Tarifa Tower, where an enthusiastic audience of over 100 peoplegathered to see the first screening. The event concluded with a discussion between the director and several cast members, who shared insights into the production process and the film's message.
After the successful premiere, "Todos Pecadores" is now preparing to enter several national and international film festivals, with the aim of reaching wider audiences and generating further conversation around environmental awareness.
In the near future, the film will also be available online and is expected to be screened at cultural events throughout Cádiz province and beyond.
