There’s something uniquely compelling about Tarifa’s fishing harbor. The scent of salt and fuel, the tangle of ropes and nets, the silhouettes of fishing boats rocking gently in the wind—it’s an atmosphere full of soul. As a fashion and portrait photographer based in Tarifa, I’m constantly drawn to real locations with authentic energy. This recent shoot brought that energy to life.
I collaborated with Rubén, a young local model, for a bold and honest editorial photo session. The idea was to blend fashion photography, artistic portraiture, and coastal lifestyle imagery, all set against the rugged beauty of one of Andalusia’s most iconic harbors.
Why Tarifa’s Fishing Harbor?
Tarifa isn’t just about kite surfing and beaches. Behind its relaxed vibe lies a strong fishing tradition—generations of seafarers who shaped the character of this southern coastal town. For this shoot, I wanted to explore that visual identity in a modern, expressive way.
The harbor gave us everything we needed: industrial textures, maritime equipment, ropes, floats, nets, and the raw, natural light that brings a cinematic quality to outdoor photography. It was the perfect contrast to more polished, indoor editorial sets.
The Model: Rubén – Local, Young, and Unfiltered
Rubén is Tarifa through and through. With sea in his eyes and Levante wind in his hair, he was the ideal subject for this photo story. He showed up barefoot, wearing olive cargo trousers and a distressed white tank top—no frills, just raw presence.
As a portrait photographer, I look for authenticity in people. Rubén didn’t need to pretend or perform. He simply existed in the space, and I captured him in that honest flow. His expressions ranged from contemplative to playful, giving us the emotional range needed for powerful storytelling.
The Concept: Editorial Meets Everyday Life
This wasn’t about high fashion in extravagant outfits. The concept was to elevate the everyday—to present a stylized version of a young man’s life in a coastal fishing town. The wardrobe was basic and believable: worn clothes, messy hair, dirt on the skin.
We used real props from the harbor: fishing nets, plastic buoys, a rod, and even a freshly caught octopus. These weren’t just accessories. They were narrative anchors that gave each portrait context, depth, and emotion.
Light & Gear: Natural Meets Controlled
While the location gave us beautiful natural backdrops, I needed lighting that could balance the sunlight and lift the shadows in a flattering way. For that, I used a 600W flash—powerful enough to compensate for harsh sun and shape the light on Rubén’s face and body without losing the ambient mood.
I worked with a top-of-the-line Nikon full-frame camera, perfect for delivering editorial-grade image quality. I also tethered the camera to an iPad, so we could preview every shot in real time, make adjustments instantly, and ensure the creative vision was consistent throughout the shoot.
This setup allowed us to work fast, stay creative, and maintain full control over composition and mood.
A Story Told Through Portraits
Each photo became a chapter in our narrative:
Rubén stands barefoot on a barrier, shielding his eyes as he scans the sea—a pose that feels timeless.
He laughs with surprise as he lifts an octopus, still wet and wriggling, captured in a split second of real emotion.
He sits casually on bundled fishing nets, his rod resting beside him, grinning as if sharing a joke with the harbor itself.
And finally, he lies back in silence, arms behind his head, staring up at the sky—a moment of pure peace and coastal freedom.
This is what I love about artistic portrait photography: the ability to create visuals that live between documentation and imagination.
